He was raised in Texas and his dad being of the old school taught David and his brother Tom how to shoot when they were growing up. David was able to tackle and stop the shooter at the middle school at Littleton because of his knowledge of guns. Here are two quotes he said in various interviews: "I realized I had time to get him before he could chamber another round." "I noticed he was working a bolt action rifle."
